The hotel
Starck on the Grand Canal.
The building is a sixteenth-century aristocratic house of some 2,800 square metres, set back from the Grand Canal beside Palazzo Grassi, now one of François Pinault's contemporary art museums. The hotelier Emanuele Garosci chose Philippe Starck to turn it into a hotel, and it opened in 2010 with sixteen bedrooms and six apartment suites. It now counts twenty-five rooms, five of them suites, and belongs to the Relegance Collection.
Starck treated the old palazzo as a stage set, and kept parts of the original building in view. Bedside lamps take the form of carnival masks, chandeliers are oversized, and mirrors double every room. Downstairs, the bar keeps fifteenth-century pillars beside mahogany and velvet. The Accademia and the Guggenheim are a short walk away, across the canal by the Accademia bridge, and the Sant'Angelo boat stop is close by.
- The Krug Lounge A champagne lounge with a view of the Grand Canal, kept for hotel guests and local members.
- PG's A dark cocktail bar of mahogany, bare brick and leather, built around fifteenth-century pillars.
- The roof terrace Open in season, above the San Marco rooftops.
