The hotel

The Peninsula comes back to Shanghai.

Before the war, the company behind The Peninsula ran four Shanghai hotels, among them the Palace and the Astor House. It came back after some sixty years and opened this one on 18 October 2009, the ninth Peninsula. The site sits at the northern end of the Bund, between the gardens of the former British Consulate and the mouth of Suzhou Creek, across the river from Pudong.

The building was the first new one on the Bund in more than six decades. The architect David Beer gave it the look of its stone neighbours, and Pierre-Yves Rochon of Paris did the interiors in the manner of a 1920s and 1930s residence, with a marble Art Deco lobby three storeys high. The MICHELIN Guide gave it two Keys in 2025, its first, and again in 2026.
