The hotel
Sherlock Holmes and Dorian Gray began here.
The Prince of Wales opened the Langham on 10 June 1865, at the top of Regent Street, in a building designed by John Giles. American guests came early, Mark Twain among them. In August 1889 an American publisher, J. M. Stoddart, invited Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle to dinner here. Both left with a commission: Wilde wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Doyle The Sign of Four.
Bombs damaged the hotel in the Second World War, and the BBC took it over, buying it outright in 1965. It returned to hotel use in 1991. The Hong Kong group Great Eagle bought it in 1995 and spent five years, from 2004 to 2009, on a restoration that brought the Victorian building back to its first form.
