The hotel
The Coburg that changed its name.
A hotel stood here from 1815, the Prince of Saxe-Coburg, in two Georgian houses on what was then Charles Street. They came down in 1894, and Lewis Isaacs and Henry Florence put up the present building, which opened in 1897 as the Coburg. In 1917, with Britain at war with Germany, it took the name of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, Queen Victoria's third son.
Charles de Gaulle, Cary Grant and Grace Kelly were among its guests, and Alec Guinness came for decades. In 2007 the hotel closed for a £70 million restoration by Guy Oliver and gained a new wing. David Collins designed The Connaught Bar, opened in 2008. Outside on Mount Street stands Silence, a water installation by Tadao Ando commissioned with the Grosvenor estate.
- The Connaught Bar Agostino Perrone's bar, designed by David Collins, twice No. 1 in The World's 50 Best Bars.
- Aman Spa Deep inside the hotel, with carved wooden screens in the treatment rooms and an indoor pool.
- Art in the house Works by Barbara Hepworth, Graham Sutherland, Damien Hirst and Louise Bourgeois hang in the rooms and corridors.
