The hotel
An insurance palace on High Holborn.
Pearl Assurance had its headquarters here from 1914 to 1989. The central block, by C. Newman, went up between 1912 and 1919, and an east wing followed in 1929. The building is listed at Grade II. Its East Banking Hall, with double-height ceilings and green marble columns, is now the Holborn Dining Room, and the grand staircase climbs seven storeys in marble. Scarfes Bar sits in the east wing.
From 2000 the building was a hotel under the name Chancery Court. It closed in July 2013 and reopened that October as Rosewood London, with interiors by Tony Chi, who kept the Edwardian detail and added lacquer, mirrors and Italian marble. The group calls it a modern manor house. Its largest suite, the Grand Manor House Wing, has seven bedrooms, a private entrance, its own lift and a postcode of its own.
- Scarfes Bar Named after the cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, whose drawings cover the walls, with an open fire, more than a thousand old books and live jazz every night.
- The Pie Room A kitchen given over to British pies beside the Holborn Dining Room, with masterclasses and a takeaway hatch.
- The courtyard Cars turn in through wrought-iron gates off High Holborn into the courtyard, away from the traffic.
