The hotel
Two and a half miles of corridors.
William Young began the design in 1898 and died two years later; his son Clyde finished the building in 1906. Some 26,000 tons of Portland stone went into it, around a thousand offices and two and a half miles of corridors, with up to 2,500 people at work inside. Churchill ran the War Office from here after the First World War, T. E. Lawrence worked in it, and Ian Fleming came and went.
The Hinduja Group led the restoration, which took eight years. The grand marble staircase, the mosaic floors and the oak panelling stayed; the courtyard cobbles were lifted, restored and laid again. Raffles opened its first British hotel here on 29 September 2023, with interiors by the late Thierry Despont and suites in the offices of former ministers. Several Bond films, Skyfall among them, had been shot inside before the builders arrived.
- Guerlain Spa Some 2,500 square metres over four floors, with a 20-metre pool, a vitality pool, nine treatment suites and a gym.
- Rooms with a past Heritage Suites sit in the old offices of ministers and generals; eight Corner Suites carry the names of women tied to the building, from Clementine Churchill to the SOE officer Vera Atkins.
- The Guards Bar Sixteen drinks that mix British and Eastern flavours, and a London version of the Raffles Sling.
