The hotel
A gentlemen's club on the edge of the park.
The building went up as Hyde Park Court, a block of flats with a private club, and its first residents moved in in 1889. It became the Hyde Park Hotel in 1902, and its postal address moved from Albert Gate to Knightsbridge. The entrance on the park side was kept for royal use; guests can still ask the Royal Parks for leave to use it on a special occasion.
Mandarin Oriental bought the hotel in 1996 and gave it its present name. In 2016 Joyce Wang began a full redesign of the rooms and public spaces. A fire on 6 June 2018, started during welding work, damaged mainly the outside of the courtyard; nobody was hurt. The public rooms were back in use by December, and the hotel reopened in full on 15 April 2019 with 141 rooms and 40 suites. It had 268 bedrooms when it opened in 1902.
