The hotel
A Loire château on the Sunset Strip.
Chateau Marmont opened on 1 February 1929 as an apartment block, commissioned by the lawyer Fred Horowitz and drawn by Arnold A. Weitzman and William Douglas Lee. They took the Château d'Amboise as a loose model. In 1931 Albert E. Smith bought the building and turned the flats into hotel suites, which is why so many rooms still have kitchens and dining tables.
Spanish cottages went up in the garden in the 1930s, and in 1956 Craig Ellwood added two bungalows. The city named the hotel a Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976. It came through the earthquakes of 1933, 1971 and 1994 without major structural damage, and André Balazs has owned it since 1990. Film stars and writers have checked in for close to a century, and the hotel built its name on keeping their secrets.
