The hotel
The Pink Palace on Sunset.
Margaret Anderson, a widow, had the hotel built with her son Stanley, and it opened on 12 May 1912. The Pasadena architect Elmer Grey drew the main building in the Mediterranean Revival style, set in twelve acres of garden. In 1941 Hernando Courtright opened the Polo Lounge, which became the power-dining room of the film business. The Pink Palace, as it is known, now has 210 rooms and suites and twenty-three bungalows.
In 1949 Paul R. Williams added the Crescent Wing, and Don Loper hung the Martinique banana leaf wallpaper he had designed in 1942. The Fountain Coffee Room opened the same year. The hotel closed at the end of 1992 for a long restoration and reopened in June 1995; Dorchester Collection has run it since 1996. The pool, with its striped loungers and cabanas, is still kept for hotel guests.
- The Polo Lounge Breakfast, lunch and late martinis in the room where Hollywood has met since 1941.
- The Fountain Coffee Room A diner of nineteen stools, serving breakfast and lunch since 1949.
- The pool Striped loungers and private cabanas, kept for hotel guests, with the Cabana Cafe alongside.
