The hotel
A curve on the seafront.
Scenic Circle Hotels built Te Pania with a Christchurch developer as a NZ$22 million project, and it opened in October 2002. Warren and Mahoney, the New Zealand architects, drew a six-storey building that bends to follow the shape of the bay. On the sea side, every room has glass from floor to ceiling and windows that open. Arrow International managed the build and finished it more than two months ahead of schedule.
The hotel stands on Marine Parade, opposite the War Memorial Centre, the city's main conference venue, and the Ocean Spa saltwater pools, which Napier City Council redeveloped alongside the project. The council backed the hotel from the start. The Art Deco centre of Napier is two minutes away on foot, and the airport about ten minutes by car, by our estimate.
