The hotel

A new hotel on an old corner.

In 1862 the Exchange Hotel opened on the corner of Te Aute Road and Havelock Road: two storeys of timber, twelve guest rooms, a dining room and a bar. A century later it gave way to a tavern known locally as The Happy Tav. The site belonged to the property developer David Mackersey, and the tenant of the tavern ran it for about nineteen years, knowing for most of them that a hotel would follow.

His family and that of Andy Lowe built a NZ$25 million block of shops, offices and a hotel, and Porters opened on 1 December 2016. The name comes from Porter Drive on the corner, named after Daniel G. Porter, once the borough's town planner. In 2023 the hotel added an apartment next door, in the Village Exchange, for families and small groups; its living room looks towards Te Mata Peak.

  • In the village Restaurants, cafés and bars of Havelock North lie within walking distance, and the hotel parks your car free of charge.
  • The Porters Apartment Three double bedrooms with their own bathrooms, a kitchen, and living-room windows facing Te Mata Peak and Mt Erin.
  • Wine country Cellar doors, cycle trails and golf courses surround the village, and Art Deco Napier is a short drive north.
