The hotel
A family winery under Te Mata Peak.
Terry and Mary Peabody founded Craggy Range in 1998, after a search that took the family to wine regions around the world before they settled on Hawke's Bay. Three generations now work in the business, and the family has placed the winery in a trust designed to keep it in their hands for a thousand years. The vines run up to the foot of Te Mata Peak, and the restaurant looks straight at it.
The cottages and lodges stand on the Giants Estate around the winery. Vineyard cottages sit among the vines, garden cottages have a terrace off each bedroom, and the river lodges are set high above the Tukituki River. All are self-contained, with a kitchen and room for four. Breakfast provisions are left each day, and the kitchens of both restaurants draw on the estate's organic gardens.
- The restaurant Three hats in the Cuisine Good Food Awards 2025, which also named it Winery Restaurant of the Year and its executive chef, Casey McDonald, Chef of the Year.
- Wine at the door The cellar door runs tours and tastings by day, and a stay in a river lodge includes a tour with one of its hosts.
- Arrive by helicopter The estate has its own helipad, available on request when you book.
