The hotel
A family palace in the Arenal.
The Casa Palacio Castelar dates from 1880 and was home to several Andalusian families before the Mercer group, which already ran Mercer Barcelona, took it on. The Seville architects Cruz y Ortiz, known for Santa Justa station and the refit of the Rijksmuseum, converted it. They kept the central patio, the façade, the iron-framed glazed balcony and even the old pulley that opened the front door.
The hotel opened in November 2016, then only the second five-star Gran Lujo hotel in the city after the Alfonso XIII. White walls around the patio give it the feel of a riad. Rooms mix nineteenth-century detail with modern furniture and Japanese-style bathrooms, and some on the second floor have terraces of their own. On the roof a long, narrow pool sits among plants, beside a bar kept for guests.
- The roof A long, narrow pool among plants and a bar open only to hotel guests.
- The patio The courtyard at the heart of the house, with the lobby, the restaurant and the cocktail bar around it.
- On foot The bullring, the cathedral and the Alcázar are each about five minutes away.
