The hotel
Built by the city for its Exposition.
Seville commissioned the hotel to lodge the dignitaries expected at the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. The Sevillian architect José Espiau y Muñoz won the design competition, overseen by Aníbal González, and building ran from 1916 to 1928. He drew on Mudéjar and Andalusian Baroque forms: arches, glazed tiles, carved wood and a courtyard at the centre. The king it was named after attended the inaugural banquet.
When the monarchy fell in 1931 the hotel became the Hotel Andalucía Palace. The city still owns the building, and Marriott runs it under The Luxury Collection. It was remodelled in 1976, again before Expo 92 under Rafael Manzano Monis, and once more in 2012, when it reopened after nine months closed with its tiles, marble and mahogany kept. The rooms now number 147.
