The city
The harbour, the peninsula and the painters.
Saint-Tropez grew around its fishermen's port, and the quays are still the heart of the town, lined with cafés and brightly coloured façades. The little beach of La Ponche lies between two old towers, and the Musée de l'Annonciade keeps Pointillist, Fauvist and Nabi paintings, among them works by Seurat, Signac and Matisse, a record of the years when the avant-garde came here to paint.
The season runs from May to September, warm and mostly dry, with July the driest month of all. Over the hill in Ramatuelle, Pampelonne runs for five kilometres of fine sand, and the coastal path links the town to it past a string of coves. In autumn the rain returns.
Arriving
By road, by rotor, or straight in.
The peninsula has no large airport of its own. Most travellers fly into Nice and finish by road or helicopter; private jets cleared for it land at La Môle, eighteen kilometres away.
