The hotel
Inside the walls.
Itchan Kala, the walled inner town of Khiva, was the first place in Central Asia on the UNESCO list, in 1991. The Zarafshon stands inside it, a new building on Pakhlavon Mahmud Street put up to sit alongside the madrasas around it. The Islam Khodja minaret, the Pahlavon Mahmud mausoleum and the Kalta Minor are each within five minutes on foot.
Inside, the decoration follows the old crafts of Khorezm: carved ganch and wood, painted ceilings, carved doors, gilding and chandeliers. At its centre is a courtyard with a fountain and wooden columns. Breakfast is served there or in the dining room, and the roof terrace looks out over the walls at sunset. On request, the kitchen cooks Khivan dishes for dinner, and the bar serves drinks through the day.
- Before the crowds Staying inside the walls means seeing the old town before the day visitors arrive and after they have gone.
- Roof terrace A terrace and lounge on the roof, with views over the walls of the old town.
- Khivan dinner Home-cooked dishes of Khiva at dinner, on request.
