The hotel
Farmhouses rebuilt by hand.
SHIGUCHI is the second project of Shouya Grigg, the British artist who came to Niseko in the 1990s and built Zaborin nearby. Here he took kominka, the old timber farmhouses of rural Japan, dismantled them and raised them again on a private estate in Hanazono. The hand-carved beams lock together without a single nail. The A-frame structures were left largely as they were.
It opened in May 2022 with five rooms in three buildings, named after the elements: chi, sui, ka, fu and ku, for earth, water, fire, wind and void. Inside, the look is spare and modern, with a private onsen bath, a library, a terrace facing the landscape and pieces from Grigg's own art collection. Another farmhouse, brought from Aizuwakamatsu in Fukushima, holds the gallery and restaurant.
- SOMOZA The gallery and restaurant next door, with seasonal cooking that draws on the Jomon and Ainu traditions of Hokkaido, Hokkaido wines and mountain views.
- Hot springs A private onsen bath in every room, and a spa built on the five elements with two private salons fed by natural hot springs.
- Art in the rooms Pieces from the owner's collection hang in the farmhouses, and each room has its own library.
