The hotel

A village of small houses on the piste.

Muwa Niseko opened on 15 December 2023 at the foot of the Grand Hirafu slopes, Niseko's main ski area. From outside it reads as a cluster of small houses, a nod to the old villages of Hokkaido; the MICHELIN inspectors saw rooms stacked like building blocks. Inside, the look is blond wood, abstract headboards and geometric lamps, built with traditional techniques and local materials.

It took a MICHELIN Key in the guide's first Japanese selection in 2024 and has kept it every year since. Many rooms come with full kitchens and their own open-air baths, which helps on a long stay. The infinity onsen sits at the highest point in Grand Hirafu and looks straight at Mount Yotei. Two Tokyo names run the kitchens: Hito by Tacubo, cooking over a wood fire, and Hiyama, the sukiyaki house.

  • The Infinity Onsen Hot-spring water at the highest point in Grand Hirafu, spilling over the edge towards Mount Yotei. A tea ceremony can be added.
  • Skis at the door Ski-in, ski-out on the Grand Hirafu runs, with a ski rental shop in the building.
  • Long stays Full kitchens and self-service laundry in the rooms, and suites of up to five bedrooms.
