The hotel

A village on the slope.

The resort opened in May 2002 on a steep slope between the desert peaks of Sinai and the Red Sea. Hill/Glazier Architects drew on the hillside towns of North Africa: domes, arches, brick, plaster and wood, with villas stepping down the hill and courtyards of fountains along the way. Thick walls hold the heat of the day and let it go at night.

An expansion was completed in 2012. More than three thousand palms shade the gardens, and two funiculars run from the top of the site to the beach. The resort makes its own water from the sea and uses what is left to irrigate the grounds. The spa has thirteen treatment rooms, some open to the air, and four outdoor pools are spread down the hill.

  • The reef at the door A dive centre on site, a protected marine reserve offshore and many of the Red Sea's 76 recognised dive sites a few minutes away.
  • The Thistlegorm by yacht Private yachts go out to the wreck of the SS Thistlegorm. The Ras Mohammed reserve is about an hour away.
  • Twelve places to eat and drink From Bullona's crudo bar on the lagoon to the Observatory Lounge, which looks across to Tiran Island.
