The city
Maya stone, colonial squares, green gold.
The Spanish founded Mérida in 1542 on T'hó, a Maya city of pyramids, and took its cut stone for a cathedral that still faces the Plaza Grande. Three centuries later the fibre of the henequen agave made the Yucatán rich, and in 1888 the planters laid out the Paseo de Montejo, a boulevard of more than six kilometres on the French model and lined it with their new mansions.
Today the old houses of Santa Ana and Santa Lucía hide courtyards, plunge pools and a new generation of kitchens. From November to April the afternoons run from 29 to 35 °C with little rain; May is the hottest month, and the rains last from June to October.
- The Plaza Grande The cathedral of 1598 on the main square, its walls laid with stone from the Maya city beneath.
- Paseo de Montejo An avenue of henequen-era mansions, planned in 1888 when the fibre was known as green gold.
- Uxmal A Puuc city 62 km to the south, its pyramid and palaces faced with carved masks of the rain god Chaac.
