The hotel

A 1920s mansion, slowly restored.

The house dates from the 1920s and stands on Calle 62, a few streets from Paseo de Montejo, the boulevard laid out in the henequen boom. Work to turn it into a hotel started more than four years before it opened, then stopped for the pandemic. Sureño finally opened its doors in 2023. The boulevard itself was planned in 1888 and lined with the mansions of the planters who grew rich on sisal.

Inside, the rooms mix modern pieces with old ones: 1920s secretary desks, wicker headboards, 1930s speakers, vintage radios, antique globes and ceramics from Oaxaca and from local workshops. The MICHELIN Guide gave the hotel a Key in 2025 and kept it in 2026. By day the roof belongs to hotel guests; in the evening the bar opens to the street, and La Mata cooks from the south of the state downstairs.

  • The roof An aquamarine pool with hammocks and loungers, kept for hotel guests by day. Just before sunset it opens to the public, with DJ sets and live jazz.
  • La Mata The ground-floor restaurant cooks from southern Yucatán, for breakfast and dinner.
  • On foot Paseo de Montejo is a few streets away, and the main square and cathedral are within walking distance.
