The hotel
The café that was never meant to close.
Alajos Hauszmann designed the palace for the New York Life Insurance Company, which made it its European headquarters in 1894. He mixed Italian Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau on one façade. The café on the ground floor became a meeting place for Budapest's writers and intellectuals, and the story goes that Ferenc Molnár threw its keys into the Danube so that it could never shut.
It shut anyway, through both world wars, and in the 1950s the rooms held a sports shop and offices. The building reopened as a hotel in May 2006 and took the Anantara name in November 2021. The café still has its frescoes, Venetian chandeliers, gilded columns and sixteen tall windows. Upstairs, the Italian architect Massimo Iosa Ghini designed the meeting rooms, and the ballroom holds up to 550 guests.
- New York Café Open since 1894, under painted ceilings and Venetian glass. The house cappuccino comes with 24-carat gold.
- Anantara Spa 500 square metres of stone and Swarovski crystal, with an indoor relaxation pool kept at 32 degrees, saunas and steam baths.
