The hotel
An insurance company's palace on the Danube.
The building went up in 1906 for the Gresham Life Assurance Company, a British insurer, on the river front directly opposite the Chain Bridge. It was built in the Art Nouveau style of the day, with wrought iron peacock gates at the entrance and Zsolnay mosaics along the arcade of the Zrínyi Passage. From the front windows, Buda Castle stands straight across the water.
Through most of the twentieth century it held flats. During the Second World War its stained glass was hidden on the roof. Four Seasons restored the palace and opened it as a hotel in June 2004, with interiors by Richmond International. The lobby alone holds more than two million mosaic tiles. KOLLÁZS brasserie curves around the ground-floor corner, and the spa sits under the roof.
- The spa on the top floor An infinity-edge pool under the roof, a scented Finnish sauna and seven treatment rooms using Omorovicza products and Hungarian moor mud.
- Afternoon tea at MÚZSA Served at weekends in the lobby bar on hand-painted Herend porcelain, with live music.
- The view across Every suite looks out on the Danube, the Chain Bridge, the Buda Hills, the castle or Fisherman's Bastion.
