The hotel
The other side of the island.
Most of Santorini's grand hotels hang on the caldera to the west. Magma faces the other way, from the hills above Vourvoulos on the north-east coast, among old vineyards and close to the beaches of dark lava sand. The view runs out across open sea to the island of Anafi. The low white buildings follow the lines of the traditional Cycladic house.
It opened in August 2022 as the first hotel in Greece in Hyatt's Unbound Collection, run by the Athens company SWOT Hospitality. Of its 59 rooms, 24 are suites, and 46 have a private pool or hot tub. The kitchen opened under Arnaud Bignon, chef of the two-starred Spondi in Athens, and the Lava Spa lies below ground, under the resort, with an indoor pool of its own.
