The hotel
Volcanic black on the caldera.
On a cliff where every other house is white, Kivotos is painted jet black and smoke grey. The architect Haris Michael took his cue from lava and the black sand beaches of the island. Inside, the rooms curve like caves, with slits in the walls and ceilings that let in light and change colour. The terraces face Skaros, the rock at Imerovigli where the island's old castle stood.
The Michopoulos family, who started Kivotos on Mykonos, own and run it. There are ten suites and villas, from about 40 square metres to 350, each with a private pool or a jacuzzi. The larger suites run over two levels. A shared infinity pool looks over the caldera, with the restaurant tables set along it, and a butler looks after each stay.
- MAVRO The restaurant sits on a glass terrace on the cliff. About seven in ten of its ingredients come from Santorini and the Cyclades.
