The hotel
The director's summer house.
Franco Zeffirelli first came to Positano at eighteen and bought this stretch of terraced cliff in 1969. He built villas he called Romeo, Juliet and Mercutio, and for decades filled them with friends: Maria Callas, Leonard Bernstein, Rudolf Nureyev, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton among them. Late in life he sold to the hotelier Giovanni Russo, and in 2013 the Friedland family took it on.
Today four villas step down the slope to the sea, Villa Bianca, Villa Rosa, Villa Azzurra and Villa Tre Pini, with sixteen suites between them. The director's art, curios and pieces of opera sets are still in the rooms. The spa sits in a greenhouse that once stood on the set of his film of La traviata. In 2026 the MICHELIN Guide gave the house two Keys.
- By boat to Positano The hotel's boat leaves from its own beach and reaches the village in under ten minutes.
- A beach below A lift cut into the rock goes down to a small black-sand beach and The Rocks, a sun deck over the water.
- La Traviata spa Treatments inside the glasshouse from Zeffirelli's film set, with a sauna and hot tub.

Getting there
Flying to Amalfi.
Scheduled flights and most private jets land at Naples, about ninety minutes by road from Positano by our estimate, longer in high summer. Salerno Costa d'Amalfi is the other runway on this side of the coast. The hotel sits on the road east of Positano, and its boat covers the last stretch into the village in under ten minutes.
