The hotel
Eight hundred years on the cliff.
In 1212 the Amalfitan cardinal Pietro Capuano built a monastery beside an old cave church in the cliff above the town. Cistercians came first; from 1583 Capuchin friars rebuilt it with cells, a refectory and a kitchen, and stayed until 1813. The cloister, dated to 1223, is the oldest in Amalfi and was restored in 2024, along with the oldest known fresco of the town.
Andrea and Alfredo Vozzi opened the convent as a hotel in 1882. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow stayed and wrote his poem Amalfi, and the path beside the hotel is named after him. A glass lift was added up the rock in 1933. The building was renovated throughout and reopened under Anantara in 2023, keeping the vaulted ceilings, the old tiles and the Baroque church with its majolica floor.
- The cloister Arches of 1223 at the centre of the convent, with the church, its marble altar and majolica floor alongside.
- Pool on the cliff A heated infinity pool high above the harbour, open all season.
- Into town on foot The port and Piazza del Duomo are about 600 metres away, a short walk down.
