The hotel
A doge's house on the Grand Canal.
The Pisani family gave the palazzo its Gothic shape in 1475. Fifty years later it became the private residence of Doge Andrea Gritti, and his name has stayed with it. It opened as a hotel in 1895 and passed to CIGA in 1947. Across the water stand Santa Maria della Salute and, a little further along, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
Somerset Maugham and Ernest Hemingway both stayed here, and suites now carry their names. In 2013 the hotel reopened after fifteen months of restoration, with interiors by Donghia Associates, the design arm of the Venetian fabric house Rubelli. The work brought back the eighteenth-century wooden lamps and painted mirrors, and added flood protection below. Cooking classes have run in the Sala Epicurea since 1975.
- The Gritti Terrace Tables set right at the edge of the Grand Canal, open from April to October.
- The Gritti Epicurean School Cooking classes and wine tastings in a teaching kitchen, led by chef Alberto Fol, with visits to the Rialto market.
- The Gritti SPA Three treatment suites run with Sisley Paris, using its Phyto-Aromatiques rituals.
