The hotel
A Roman coin under Palazzo Genovese.
Palazzo Genovese went up in 1892 for the Genovese family, with a Gothic facade on the Grand Canal. It stands on ground once held by the monastery of San Gregorio, next to Santa Maria della Salute. After years standing empty, the building was turned into a hotel in 2009 by a Florentine architecture studio. It has fifty rooms and suites, a private garden and its own pier.
The restoration uncovered a seventh-century stone house, the remains of a ninth-century wooden one and a Roman coin, which gave the hotel its name. Inside, the rooms are each decorated differently, often in deep reds and gold. Outside, Dorsoduro's museum mile starts at the door, with Punta della Dogana and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection a few minutes away, and the gondola ferry across the canal leaves a few steps from the door.
- On the Grand Canal A wooden terrace on the water for drinks or dinner, with sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon.
- The garden A private inner garden, and the hotel's own pier on the canal.
- Across by gondola A traghetto, the gondola ferry across the Grand Canal, leaves a few steps from the hotel.
