The hotel
Giuseppe Cipriani's island hotel.
Giuseppe Cipriani, the man behind the Bellini, began building on the edge of Giudecca in 1956. The hotel opened two years later, across the water from St Mark's and screened by gardens. The pool came out larger than planned, the hotel says, because someone confused feet with metres. It is still the largest in Venice, heated and filled with filtered seawater.
Belmond now runs the house. In 2025 Peter Marino finished the first phase of a renovation lasting several years: a double-height lobby beside the old entrance, and new suites over the Casanova Gardens, two of them laid out as Venetian apartments with libraries. A Dior spa has opened, and Oro, the hotel's restaurant, holds a MICHELIN star. Forbes Travel Guide rates the hotel five stars.
- The pool The largest pool in Venice, heated and filled with filtered seawater, with Il Porticciolo alongside for lunch.
- Five minutes to St Mark's The hotel's own boat crosses to St Mark's Square in about five minutes, around the clock.
- Palazzo Vendramin A separate palazzo within the property, with its own rooms and suites and a butler for each.
