The hotel
Eight centuries of lodging travellers.
Ca' di Dio was founded in 1272 as a place to lodge pilgrims and Crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. The compound sits on the Riva Ca' di Dio in Castello, between St Mark's and the Arsenale, with the Biennale gardens next door. Inside, the buildings close around three courtyards, and ten of the suites look out over the lagoon to San Giorgio Maggiore.
The hotel opened in May 2021. Patricia Urquiola's studio fitted it out as a Venetian house, with fine woods, rich textiles and Murano glass made for the hotel. Of the 66 rooms, 57 are suites, set over three floors. In one courtyard a vegetable garden grows produce for the kitchen. The hotel is run by VRetreats, part of the Alpitour group, and the MICHELIN Guide gives it one Key.
- Three courtyards One holds the cloister garden where Essentia serves breakfast and light dishes through the day.
- On the Biennale route The Arsenale and the Biennale gardens are close by along the Riva, as is St Mark's.
- A water entrance Water taxis and the hotel's own boats pull up at a side canal entrance.
