The hotel
A family palace with Galileo in the library.
The Sagredo family were wealthy and powerful in Venice, and this palace on the Grand Canal at Campo Santa Sofia was their home. Galileo, a friend of Gianfrancesco Sagredo, came to study in the family library, which held some ten thousand books. In 1734 Andrea Tirali built the double marble staircase, and Pietro Longhi covered its walls with the Fall of the Giants.
Later the building served as city offices, before a restoration turned it into a hotel of 42 rooms and suites. Italy has declared it a National Monument. Tiepolo painted the ceiling of the room where breakfast is now served, and Sebastiano Ricci, Niccolò Bambini and Longhi are all on the walls. Across the canal lies the Rialto Market, reached by the gondola ferry that stops at the door.
- The staircase Andrea Tirali's marble staircase of 1734, under Pietro Longhi's frescoes of the Fall of the Giants.
- The Music Room The frescoed ballroom, with a hidden door that once led to a bedroom two floors up.
- The roof terrace A terrace over the rooftops, its railing decorated with flowers of Murano glass.
