The hotel

Athens then and now.

The name is a play on words: Athens was, and Athens is. The hotel opened in April 2015 on Dionysiou Areopagitou, the pedestrian street that curves round the south slope of the Acropolis, a few steps from the Acropolis Museum and the Akropoli metro station. It is a member of Design Hotels and the sister of Anemi on Santorini. All twenty-one rooms have a balcony.

Inside, the reference is the Greek modernism of the 1960s. Floors and bathrooms use marble from several regions of Greece, the panelling is Greek walnut, and the furniture is Italian, some of it after Le Corbusier and Michael Graves. The best views of the Parthenon start on the fourth floor, on the street side. On the seventh floor, SENSE and the bar sit under a roof that closes in bad weather, so the terrace is used all year.

  • SENSE on the roof Chef Alexandros Charalabopoulos cooks modern Greek food on the seventh floor, and the MICHELIN Guide gave the restaurant its first star in October 2026.
  • The walk outside Dionysiou Areopagitou is closed to traffic. The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Acropolis entrance and Plaka are all within a short walk.
  • Breakfast below An à la carte breakfast is served until 11 am in the ground-floor restaurant and its courtyard.
