The hotel

Olive groves behind the coast.

LUZ opened in 2021 on 35 acres of private land between Garzón and José Ignacio, about ten minutes inland from the village. The buildings are washed in red and ochre and set round a courtyard with a plunge pool, in the manner of a Mexican hacienda. Inside, the styling borrows from Morocco and the Mediterranean, with polished concrete, brass and natural fibres.

Around the house lie pine woods, olive groves, vineyards and a freshwater lagoon. The lodge presses its own olive oil and makes its own wine and gin. Vegetables come from an organic garden. The kitchen is built round live fire, and the menu changes with what the garden and the coast bring in that day. Drinks are poured from the lodge's own gin and red wine at a bar set to face the sunset.

  • The chef's table A dinner of sixteen courses cooked over live fire, and on some nights a candlelit table nine metres long set out in the pine forest.
  • Water A heated saltwater infinity pool, and a freshwater reservoir for swimming and paddleboarding.
  • Days on the land Picnic breakfasts in the olive groves, tennis, beach volleyball, yoga, bicycles and an outdoor cinema twice a month.

Each suite is designed differently, with a super king bed, a wood-burning fireplace and a terrace or patio of its own.

  • Arrival Check-out by 11 am.
  • Children Older children only. Sources give a minimum age of 10 or 12, so we confirm the current rule with the lodge before booking.
  • Season November to April is beach weather. From July to late October the area is calmer and southern right whales pass along the coast.

Getting there

Flying to José Ignacio.

Punta del Este International at Laguna del Sauce is about 55 minutes away by car. It takes summer flights and private jets, which use its own general aviation terminal. Montevideo Carrasco, with flights all year, is just under two hours by road, and guests can also arrive by helicopter.
