The city

A lighthouse and a lagoon.

Some 32 km east of Punta del Este, the village gathers around a lighthouse tower erected in 1877. Beyond it Route 10 heads on towards Rocha and crosses Laguna Garzón on Rafael Viñoly's circular bridge, opened in 2015 in place of a two-car ferry that only ran by day and in fair weather.

From December to February some twenty restaurants open their doors. The rest of the year belongs to surfers, kitesurfers, birdwatchers on the lagoons and the people who come to watch for whales from the shore.

When to go

December to March.
