The hotel
The convent behind a novel.
In 1621 Doña Catalina de Cabrera gave land in San Diego for a convent of the Poor Clares, and the master builder Simón González began the work. The nuns kept orchards and sold their baking for nearly 250 years. A roof beam in one cloister still carries the date 5 April 1788. After the convent closed in 1861 the buildings served as a charity hospital, a medical school and a prison.
In the 1940s, when the crypt was emptied, a young reporter named Gabriel García Márquez watched the work. A child's skull with a long copper-coloured mane, found in one tomb, became the seed of his 1994 novel Of Love and Other Demons. After three years of restoration the convent opened as a hotel in the late 1990s. It is now one of five Sofitel Legend hotels.
- El Coro The bar has a glass panel in the floor over a tomb and a stair down to the crypt.
- The chapel A half-hour tour covers the chapel, the empty crypt and the hatch where townspeople left food and gifts for the nuns.
- An island day Day trips run to a sister hotel's private island, about 45 minutes away, for diving and the beach.
