The hotel

A beach house with a story in every room.

Emmanuelle de Clermont-Tonnerre, a French lawyer, had a family beach house on the rocks above Praia da Ferradura. She asked the Brazilian architect Octávio Raja Gabaglia to turn it into a hotel: low buildings stepped down the cliff, joined by open lounges, with furniture from Brazilian makers in recycled or certified wood, chosen as a stand against deforestation. Brigitte Bardot fell for the village in 1960, and the town's seafront promenade now carries her name.

Each room takes a piece of Brazil as its theme. Borboleta is named for the butterflies in the garden, O Guarani for the opera by Carlos Gomes, and Outeiro da Glória has painted tiles by Laura Taves. Much of the art was bought on the owner's travels across the country, often from artists in poor communities. Below, the hotel keeps two boats for guests.

Flying to Búzios.

Cabo Frio International is about 30 km away, around forty minutes by car by our estimate, and takes business jets from abroad. Light aircraft can land at Umberto Modiano, the airfield in Búzios itself. From Rio Galeão the road covers about 180 km, two and a half to three hours.
