The hotel
Lower down, in the Zona Sur.
Casa Grande stands in Calacoto, a residential district in the Zona Sur, where La Paz falls away from the plateau towards the south. At about 3,300 metres it sits well below El Alto and below the old centre, which makes the first nights at altitude easier on most guests. Cafés, restaurants and shops are close by, and the golf club is about eight kilometres away. The historic centre is a drive up the valley.
The building is modern, with sixty-five rooms and suites. Some have balconies over the city, and some have whirlpool baths. On the top floor, Casabar looks out across the rooftops, while the Yerba Buena restaurant cooks Bolivian and international dishes with seasonal produce, some of it organic. Meeting rooms take up to four hundred people, and parking is free when booked ahead.
- Indoor pool A large heated pool with views over the city, next to saunas, a jacuzzi, a steam room and the gym.
- Casabar The top-floor bar, for wine and spirits over the Zona Sur skyline.
- Altitude At around 3,300 metres, the hotel is one of the gentler places in La Paz to adjust after landing at more than 4,000.
