The hotel
Bolivian stone, Bolivian art.
Atix opened in October 2016 in Calacoto, a residential district of the Zona Sur, and was the first Bolivian hotel to join Design Hotels. Stuart Narofsky and Jennifer Rusch of New York drew a block shaped like a parallelogram, with large bay windows that frame the Andean valley. The facade is Comanche stone, the same stone that paved the streets of La Paz in the 1920s and 1930s. In Quechua, the name means the one who thrives.
Inside, the materials stay local: stone floors, headboards of ajo wood from the Amazon, cowhides from Tarija. The art is the work of Gastón Ugalde, whom the Telegraph called the Warhol of the Andes, and more than a hundred of his pieces hang in the corridors, rooms and public spaces, from views of the city's outskirts to the salt flats of Uyuni. An artist-in-residence programme adds new work.
- 591 Bar On the seventh floor, with cocktails built on Bolivian flavours and native spirits, and the southern districts below.
- Proyecto Nativa A restaurant that began in Sucre, cooking Bolivian produce with techniques from elsewhere, open every evening.
- Gastón Ugalde More than a hundred works by the Bolivian painter and photographer, in the corridors, the rooms and the Atix Suite.
