The hotel
A diver's name on a coconut plantation.
Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of Jacques, first came to Lesiaceva Point in the 1980s, when the land was a backpackers' lodge. An American investor later took it over, Cousteau lent his name, and the resort opened under it in 1995. His father, by one account, opposed the idea at first. Today it covers about seventeen acres of coconut plantation where Savusavu Bay meets the open sea.
The bures are built from local timber under thatched roofs, with high ceilings, fans and louvred windows to let the breeze through. None has a television. Marine biologists live on site: they lead the reef walks and mangrove trips, grow giant clams and farm coral. A two-acre organic garden supplies the kitchen with more than a fifth of its fruit, vegetables and herbs.
- Diving with a biologist The resort's own PADI dive centre goes to sites ten to twenty minutes out, and to the Namena Marine Reserve, about 45 minutes by boat.
- The Bula Club Two programmes split by age, two pools with water slides, a tree house and a zip line. Each child under six has a nanny from morning until evening.
- Fijian evenings Kava by the pool, local musicians at dinner and a lovo feast from the underground oven once a week.
