The hotel
Seawater on the west coast.
Manama is on the north-east tip of the island. This resort sits on the west coast, between the village of Zallaq and a run of royal palaces, directly on the beach. It opened in February 2011 with 262 rooms and a ballroom of 1,100 square metres, close to the Bahrain International Circuit. Accor runs it under Sofitel, its French luxury brand, and the spa carries the group's Thalassa Sea & Spa label, with a kids club for younger guests.
The draw is the Thalassa spa, 2,000 square metres built around seawater, which the MICHELIN Guide calls the only thalassotherapy centre in the Gulf. The architecture mixes Arabic forms with French colonial touches, around well-kept gardens. The guide notes that the spa draws guests from Europe and from Saudi Arabia, across the causeway. Indoors and out there are pools, a hammam, saunas and steam rooms, and on the beach a club with tennis and squash courts.
- Thalassa Sea & Spa Seawater treatments, with seawater and freshwater infinity pools, a hammam, steam rooms and saunas.
- On the sand A private beach, a swim-up pool bar and a rooftop infinity pool looking over the Gulf.
- Race weekends The Bahrain International Circuit is about five minutes away by car.
