The hotel
From bank vault to bar.
The building on Passeig de Gràcia went up in the middle of the twentieth century as the head office of a bank, on the boulevard of Eixample. The architects Carlos Ferrater and Joan Trias de Bes kept its stately front and laid out the inside in open, clean-lined spaces, and Mandarin Oriental opened the hotel there in November 2009, with 120 rooms and suites.
Patricia Urquiola designed the rooms and suites in light wood and soft colours, with touches of blue and yellow. The bank survives in the details: drinks in the Bankers Bar come under a ceiling of old safe deposit boxes. Upstairs, Terrat serves Mediterranean food and cocktails on the roof, and the spa below covers about 1,000 square metres.
- Moments Raül Balam's restaurant, one MICHELIN star, cooking from Catalan tradition and Mediterranean produce, with more than 600 wines.
- Terrat The rooftop terrace, with a pool deck, cocktails and views over the city.
- The spa About 1,000 square metres, with a steam room, a Turkish bath and a 12 metre indoor lap pool.
