The city
A castle above the river.
Bratislava keeps its centre compact: a walkable old town of lanes and squares under the castle hill, and the Danube running wide beside it. On the embankment, the Grand Hotel River Park has a spa on its eleventh floor with a pool looking over the water; RIVERBANK, its restaurant, holds three Gault&Millau toques.
From May to September afternoons run from twenty to twenty-six degrees, and the rain stays moderate. Winters are cold and grey, with highs close to freezing in December and January.
- Michael’s Gate The only gate left from the medieval walls, at the head of a narrow pedestrian street.
- Bratislava Castle The square white castle on its hill above the Danube, overlooking the old town.
- Devín A castle ruin on a rock where the Morava meets the Danube, on the western edge of the city.
