The city
Castle, kippers and the western light.
Peel grew up where the River Neb meets the sea. Its harbour is still the busiest fishing port on the island, and since 1884 Moore's Kipper Yard has been smoking herring by the quay; you can watch it done. Across the water, a causeway runs out to St Patrick's Isle and the walls of Peel Castle.
Because the town looks west, the Manx call it the sunset city. Norse kings knew the bay well: Olaf the Black beached his fleet here in 1228. The House of Manannan, partly in the old railway station, tells that story. Come between May and August, when the evenings are long.
- Peel Castle The castle walls enclose St Patrick's Isle, reached by causeway, and the ruins of a cathedral begun about 1250.
- House of Manannan A museum of Manx history opened in 1997, partly in the old station, where the boat Odin's Raven is on show.
- Moore's Kipper Yard A smokehouse working since 1884, with tours of the curing and smoking.
