The city
Where Tynwald used to sit.
For more than fifty years the Manx parliament met in Castletown, in the Old House of Keys, until it moved to Douglas in 1874. The town kept its castle, its grammar school, first built as a chapel around 1200, and a harbour where fishing boats still tie up.
Across the bay, Langness runs out into the Irish Sea, and its golf course asks you to drive over the water at the seventeenth. South of the town the shore at Scarlett shows the remains of an ancient volcano. Castle Rushen opens from Easter to October; plan on May to August for the best weather.
- Castle Rushen Begun in 1265 for a Norse king and taken three times by Robert the Bruce.
- Old House of Keys The chamber used by Tynwald from 1821 to 1874, now a museum of Manx National Heritage.
- Nautical Museum The home of George Quayle, banker and inventor, secret passages included.
