The hotel

The archbishops' house and the first Guinness.

Archbishop Theophilus Bolton commissioned the palace around 1730 and Edward Lovett Pearce, the leading Palladian architect in Ireland, completed it in 1732. The Archbishops of Cashel lived here until 1833. Under Archbishop Arthur Price, his steward Richard Guinness brewed ale with water from the palace well, and Richard's son Arthur used £100 from the archbishop's will to start his own brewery in Dublin. The garden now grows hops in his memory.

The Church of Ireland sold the house in 1959 and it ran as a hotel until 2014. Two years later the Magnier family, owners of Coolmore Stud, bought it and began a restoration that lasted from 2017 until the reopening on 1 March 2022. The old well, found during the works, can be seen in Mikey Ryan's, and the Bishop's Walk still climbs from the garden to the Rock.

  • The Rock of Cashel The gardens join the Bishop's Walk, which leads up to the medieval complex on the Rock, and suites in the main house look straight at it.
  • A pool that goes outside A heated 17-metre pool runs from the spa out into the open air, with a sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and gym, all free for residents.
  • Horse country The owners breed thoroughbreds at Coolmore, and an equine concierge arranges rides on trails nearby.
