The city
A Cycladic town, and the beaches beyond.
Mykonos Town, the Chora, is a tangle of whitewashed lanes, chapels and bougainvillea around the old port. Little Venice rises straight out of the sea on its western edge, under the row of windmills on the hill. The south coast is where the beach clubs and most of the hotels are, from Ornos and Psarou to Elia and Kalo Livadi; the north, open to the wind, stays wilder.
The island lives from May to October. July and August are the height of it, when the yachts anchor offshore and the restaurants book out weeks ahead; June and September are less crowded, with the sea still warm. In winter most hotels close.
Arriving
One small airport, close to town.
The airport sits just outside Mykonos Town, with a single runway of 1,890 metres. It is busy in summer and sees little traffic in winter.

When to go
May to October.
Dry and sunny from May to October, with the sea warm enough to swim from June. In July and August the meltemi, a strong north wind, keeps the heat in check. Winter is mild and wet, with few visitors.
