The hotel
A village that keeps a promise.
During an outbreak of plague, the people of Oberammergau vowed to stage the Passion of Christ every ten years if no one else died of it. They first performed it in 1634 and have kept the rhythm ever since, broken only by war and pandemics. About two thousand villagers will take part again in 2030. The theatre stands about half a kilometre from the hotel.
The Maximilian is a privately run house on Ettaler Straße, run by the Gensmantel family. It was built in the regional style, with timber ceilings and modern furniture inside. Behind the village rise the Ammergau Alps, the largest nature reserve in Bavaria. Walking and cross-country ski trails start at the door, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen lies about twelve kilometres to the south.
