The hotel
Where Berlin's telegrams went through.
Work on the building began in 1910, and by 1916 it was running as the city's main telegraph office, one of the largest post buildings in Germany. Messages also travelled underground: the basement held one of the biggest pneumatic post systems in Europe, and pieces of the tubes are still on show in the lobby, the bar and the restaurant. The building is listed.
The Berlin restaurateur Roland Mary, known for Borchardt, spent about ten years on the conversion. The hotel opened softly in November 2022, with Root serving its first dinners that week. Inside, the brick and steel stay bare, with Deco details and plain modern furniture. Monbijoupark is outside, and the Bode Museum and Museum Island are a short walk away.
- Root The main restaurant, with a counter facing the open kitchen and a bar alongside, cooking international and local dishes.
- The hub About 1,200 square metres for training and recovery, with areas for yoga, boxing and CrossFit, saunas and treatment rooms.
- The coachman's yard The old courtyard for the post carriages, now an events hall under a glass roof.
