The hotel
Moneo at Potsdamer Platz.
When Potsdamer Platz was rebuilt in the 1990s, the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo took a whole city block for the Grand Hyatt and a neighbouring office building. He clad it in red sandstone, set small windows in columns along the grid of the stone, and kept the outside calm so as not to shout over its neighbours. Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, named after the Berlin-born actress, opens in front.
Inside, the Swiss designer Hannes Wettstein did the original interiors and furniture, spare in line and material, with contemporary art hung through the building. The rooms have since been redesigned by Tony Chi. VOX, its main restaurant, has been cooking since 1998, under the chef Hugo Thiébaut today. On the roof, the Club Olympus spa has its pool, sauna and whirlpool, and a terrace of its own.
- Club Olympus The spa sits on the roof, with an indoor pool, sauna, steam bath, whirlpool, gym and a terrace above the city.
- VOX Hugo Thiébaut's kitchen mixes French cooking with Japanese ideas and a sushi counter, with a terrace in summer.
- Vox Bar More than 150 whiskies, cocktails and a lounge for smokers.
